BUFORD -- Atlanta's own Drivin' N Cryin' is taking the stage at Buford's 37 Main tonight at 10 p.m. with local band Athens opening the show.
Better known for their hits "Straight to Hell," "Fly Me Courageous" and "Honeysuckle Blue," the rock band has been touring the country since the release of their last album, "The Great American Bubble Factory" in 2009.
While living in New York for the past few years with his wife, lead singer Kevn Kinney found time to create a solo album called "A Good Country Mile," which was released in the beginning of August. He was accompanied by a local New York group named the Golden Palominos on the LP.
"I don't really know what this album is about," Kinney said. "There's something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. I sing some new songs and revisit classic Drivin' N Cryin' songs."
He will be incorporating some of the latest tracks at the show tonight while playing all the crowd favorites.
Drivin' N Cryin' is also working on a benefit record to raise money for the National Academy of Reco
rding Arts and Sciences's MusiCares Foundation Inc. based in Nashville. The nonprofit foundation's mission is to help musicians in need, whether it is financial or medical. A handful of artists are scheduled to pick their favorite
song from any DNC album to record.
"Collective Soul has already done one song for it," Kinney said. "A lot of people want to play 'Straight to Hell.' Maybe we'll let them record that and put it on iTunes for the fans to choose which version to buy."
The benefit album will be released in 2012.
Don't be surprised if you hear an unreleased song called "Dirty." It's the first song Kinney has written for the next DNC album. He doesn't know when it will be released officially because the band hasn't hit the studios yet.
"It will be a dirty record," Kinney said. "On this one, we're taking it in a different approach. More atmospheric, dirty and in your face."
Athens goes on at 8 p.m. Drivin' N Cryin' performs at 10 p.m.
